Family Time

July 1st, 2009

The past weekend brought in a nice surprise.  My Dad’s sister stopped in with the entire family.  This hasn’t happened in like 25 some years.  Yea sure they have been back to visit and stuff, but it’s been a very long time since they all showed up together at same time.  Darwin Richard has been away the longest and I had no idea he was going to be here.  I came in the door behind him and I about fell over.  Everyone looks great and seems to be doing well.  The great thing that I discovered is that they are on facebook, so we were able to connect and can stay in touch better.

So I was able to get some photos of everyone, but my son Darwin.  He was in minot of course, but the good news was that Darwin, Julie and Ricky were flying out of Minot airport on monday, so they got to meet him.  This was the first time Darwin got to meet Darwin.  I am most grateful to Julie for taking pics and sending me the original files.  I hope we don’t have to wait another 25+ years for this to happen again.  Life just seems too busy to take time out for family and fun. Everyone scatters around the country and makes it even harder.  It’s hard enough to get schedules to jive with the immediate family in the same town.  Crazy I tell ya.

It gave me a great chance to try the demo version of Alien Skin Bokeh.  It’s pretty handy software and really easy to use.  The website even has some great tutorials to get you going quickly.  A good tool to have in the arsenal.  It is a bit pricey at $200.00.  At least other $200.00 graphical software offers more than one ability, where this is bascially one thing, bokeh.

Once Upon a Summer’s Weekend

June 22nd, 2009

img_1034

Lots of fun this past weekend and great weather to boot made it feel like summer has finally agreed to shape up.  Friday night was the fireman’s supper/dance  and Rendezvous Region Rod Run put on their annual events, which included a slow drag, loudest car, and burn out.  Be sure to check out their home page for the latest information.  The one thing I would like to see is a different time slot so it’s not going on at the same time of the fireman’s supper.  I think a bigger crowd would attend and I am sure there is people that would like to see it, but can’t get to it due to the supper.  I didn’t make it to the Saturday morning events, but they had fun events for all ages to part take in.  They have pictures of it tho on their home page.

Saturday brought in the Smash for Cash demolition derby.  I love derbies and it seems like every one I have been to, the weather is clear and hot.  I got my daughters to go with me so that was a fun time.  I think it’s the first time either one of them have been to a derby.  They had a really great turn out and it was nice to see that and I hope they can continue to do it in the future.  It was pure fun and nobody got hurt.  It was good to see the town hoppin with people.

Darlings

Sunday brought Father’s day and my youngest daughter left for the week to her camp.  The weather was nice, but very muggy.  I decide to go investigate a hunting spot more and I was shocked to see how the foliage really came to life over the week.  Things are green and full finally.   The grass on the trails must of shot up a foot over night.  The skeeters were thick and hungry also.  I managed to get out of the hills just as it started to sprinkle.  The rain just needs to hold back for a while and let things get dried out good.  I will definately take more weekends like this one tho.

Prequel Beast

June 15th, 2009

Here is some surprising news I got from a friend of mine.  Apparently one year ago to the month, they were able to capture this photo of a baby beast in the very same house I had my encounter.  Odds are this is probably the same beast and there is probably another baby beast in the house.  It seems this house has turned into a breeding ground for producing beasts.  What sort of evil is this?

Many people that heard about my adventure thought I was fibbing till they saw the pictures I had posted with the story and now with this baby beast picture, I’m not alone in dealing with these beasts.  Apparently my friends had entered the house to explore it and ran into the baby beast with hideous hissing and they immediately retreated for fear of running into ma or pa beast.  This was a quick snapshot of the baby beast before retreating.

I had to work over the weekend, but I got a phone call while at work from my dad around 10pm Saturday night stating that they had driven over to the place of my encounter and they ran into the beast also.  He said that he had seen my dragon and it was one big beast.  He said he could hear it taking off for flight and it soared right over top of them.  Hopefully the beast doesn’t get aggitated by all the extra traffic since being discovered.  We wouldn’t want the beast going on a rampage.

Reports of similar beasts have come in from an area not far from this location also, so apprently they like that part of the world.  A farmer reported seeing two full grown beasts sitting on top of one of his buildings last year.

What do you think?  A movie just waiting to be made?  Alfred Hitchcock’s  - The Birds wouldn’t hold a match to The Beasts.

Death From Above

June 11th, 2009

Today started out as just another ordinary day and the big question was where to go for today’s adventure.  I first needed a nap, so I napped while Luka ate her breakfast and upon waking up I wanted to photograph a bridge.  No harm in that right?  So I pack things up and Luka is all excited to go on our adventure, if only we had know this could of possibly been our last adventure together.

I must warn you, the horrific pictures below are straight off  the camera, well not all of them are horrific of course, like the first two are safe.  Might want to cover the eyes of small children.  You can click the image for a much bigger image.

Here we are walking along, Luka always has point and she always stops and make sure I’m still coming along while providing safety from any oncoming beasts.  What a great dog!

What do we have here?  We came upon an abandoned farm and there is a house in the trees that I didn’t get a picture of cause you really can’t get a picture of it due to the trees completely surround the house.  I’m looking at what appears to be a garage and a barn.  This should of been my warning that a wicked beast lives among these parts and has obviously destroyed these buildings with it’s mighty force.  Silly me thinks instead, time has just taken a toll on these buildings.

I have to apolgize here, what happens in the house is pretty graphical, but I have no pictures of the said events.  It all happened so fast that I had to save myself instead of snapping photos.  To be perfectly honest with you, taking  pictures was the last thing from my mind.  I will try to paint you picture of the events.

Luka and I approach this two story house that appears to be all peaceful.  Again Luka has point and she will not enter the house without my ok.  I give her the go ahead to enter and in she goes.  At this point and time,  I’m pretty excited about this, you got to love finding abandoned homes.  I enter thru the door and I find myself standing in a kitchen.  There is a unique kitchen stove and it’s a stove that I have never seen before.  It’s a stove that uses wood logs to operate and with the heat from the stove it’s distributed amonst the house via a pipe that runs thru the house with various vents in the pipe.  I can’t get pictures cause of this stove cause I needed my other lens, 28mm was too much for these small rooms.  I’d would go back and get more pics of this stove, but the beast within this house is alive and well, it’s not safe to return to risk one’s self.

Kitchen is clear, Luka heads into the a living room, which is probably also a dining area.  Remember, this house is small, the rooms are small.  So I’m walking straight ahead thru the kitchen and notice a trap door in the floor.  I did not open this door and I do not recommend anyone else to do so.  The beast probably keeps it’s pray down there to feed upon.  As I cross into the other room, there is a stair case going to the second floor.  The stairs probably go up 10-12 steps and than has a landing and turns.  I begin to smell this odor, at the time the odor isn’t clicking with me, but it’s definately there.  Luka is standing in the dining/living room area and looking at the steps of the stairway.  I find this rather odd as she is standing across the room looking at it.  I figure, ok, I’ll take point and go up the stairs.  I proceed up the stairs and get to the first landing.  I turn around and notice Luka has now came to the staircase and is looking up at me.  I should of paid attention as she was trying to tell me not to proceed.  I just figured she was scared of steps.  I stood on the landing going, wow this odor is getting much stronger.  I start thinking,  this is the stench of death, something is living here.  I can’t place what this odor goes with tho.  I proceed up the second set of steps and I look down at Luka.  She is looking at me and has one paw on the first step.  She has this look on her face like, don’t do it man, it’s just not worth it.  I reassure myself, it’s the middle of the day, lots of light to see.  I notice as I am going up the steps, there is a door way, which is open to the immediate left right smake at the top of the steps.  This would be directly above the kitchen where I entered.  Up I go, one step at a time getting closer to the top and this smell is just over powering me.  Something is dead up here I keep thinking, it’s just wicked.  I look back before I take the last step before I hit the second floor and Luka is now at the first landing.  Her eyes are telling me to come back, but I am not afraid.  I put one foot on the second floor and I hear this stirring coming from behind the wall of the very first room to my left.  I pause for a moment, look back and see Luka has her eyes covered.  Now I’m starting to think back to when I was testing and seeing if Luka was any good at  medical stuff, Kari knows what I am talking about there.  She failed miserably at  it.  I slowly bring my other foot to the second floor and can hear this huge rukos going on.  I have to backup a moment,  I noticed as I was coming up the second flight of stairs that the room on the left had a window in it and the light was shining thru it and lighting up the hallway of the second floor.  So I begin to shift and turn into the door way of the room to my left and a huge shadow suddenly blocks out the light and overcomes me, it’s gone dark.  I hear banging liking crazy, but I can’t make anything out.  There is no time to take a picture of this blackness.  I turn and jump to the first landing, which Luka has already left and is heading for the living/dining room.  As I leap forward to the first landing I turn back to look and notice the beast is going out the window.  I land on the landing safely and decide to go back up.  I go slow and steady back up and stand in the doorway.  It’s hard to see in with the window so bright and my eyes are adjusted to the darkeness.  I don’t dare enter the room as I figure it’s a breeding ground and their is probably more.  I decent back to the first floor where Luka is motioning me to get out quickly.

I have to stop and gather information and process it quickly.  The beast has left and is outside probably waiting for us and the pickup is not nearby.  There is no cover, we are gonna have to make a run for it.  I knew the dog could run faster than me, so I figured I would be the weaker pray for the beast.  I head back through the kitchen to the door opening and Luka gives me the signal, if we split up, one of us has a chance.  I reassure her, no matter what we must stick together.  Once we go out this door and break thru the trees, we will be in clear view.  I approach the edge of the trees and it’s looking safe.  I see no beast roaming around.  I never thought to check the skys tho.  So we step out and into the opening we are heading for the pickup.  All of sudden whoosh and it gets darker, zomg it’s the shadow again.  The beast is above us circling us.  I grab the camera, thinking I will at least get pics of the beast incase we don’t make it out alive.  These pictures you are about to see are straight off the camera.  I didn’t have time to dial in the adjustments for the fill lighting as it circle our heads.  This makes it even harder to identify the beast.  I’m pretty sure it’s a dragon tho.  Click the images for larger version.  Images captured as it circle us over and over.

We managed to escape with our lives thankfully. We lived to do another adventure. I never did get a picture of a bridge tho.

Middle of June closing in

June 11th, 2009

International Ride

In 4 days it will be the middle of June and we’ve yet to hit 80 degrees.  Actually we’ve only have a handful of days that made it 70 degrees.  Last weekend, parts of the state got up to 2 inches of snow even.  It’s just been cold and wet.  The back roads are falling apart and it’s had a huge impact on the farming community as they struggle to get into the fields of mud.  The June berries should be ready in August.

I got up today and the sun was shining, so I decided to take advantage of it and get some mowing done.  So far the yard has only needed to be mowed 3 times, this is how slow things are growing.  I don’t mind that at all, evil grass.  So anyway I am mowing and I noticed on the martin bird house that a martin family is living on one side of the house and a sparrow family is living on the other side.  Neither family likes the lawn mower and watch like a hawk.  The martin bird sits in the house with it’s head sticking out while the sparrow bird sits outside of the house watching.  I start to wonder as they are watching me go around in circles what they must be thinking.  They don’t seem to be afraid, but than maybe they are but their duty to save the eggs is more important.   The things a guy can think about while riding on a lawn mower.

I got the pleasure of a short visit from a classmate friend of mine that I grew up with.  The picture is a pic of the old international truck that he got restored.  I actually got to go for a ride in it, man does that thing move too.  He enters car shows with it and everything.  It’s too bad he lives way over in PA tho, but I can’t blame him for getting out of ND.  Him and his family seem to be doing well and that is what is important.

I continue to learn lighting with photography.  It’s really amazing at how difficult it can be.  I learned the closer you are to the light, the softer the light is and the further from the light, the harder the light is.  It took me a while to digest that as I would of thought the opposite of that.  Once you start thinking about it and see it, it makes sense.  I’m in the process of building 2 beauty dishes from a DYI article I seen.  It’s been fun so far and once done I have to figure out how to use em properly.  The great thing about these, they are portable, don’t have to have electricity to power em, just the batteries for the flash.  That reminds me, I need to get some more batteries.  I can’t imagin trying to learn all of this outside of digital.  All the rolls of film and developing I would be wasting, yikes.

So This is Spring

HDR Sunset

Only a few more days left in May and it’s finally getting green outside.  Some tree are still in the process of budding, not even open yet.  It’s looking like it’s going to be a repeat of last summer.  I hear the farmers are having a miserable time. Crop dates have come and gone and been extended and looking like the extended dates won’t be met either due to all the wetness.  The past weekend brought in an unneeded 2-3 inches of rain.  I guess that will pretty much nail the season for the farmers.   Next week brings us into June and highs for the week are looking at only reaching into the 60s.  We need heat and wind to dry things up and for things to grow.

Schools out and I haven’t seen anyone’s report card yet, so I assume everyone passed.  Darwin won’t be coming back for the summer.  We’ll have to look forward to visits instead.  CJ and I need to work on her senior pics, see if we can come up with something.  Ally is doing Ally stuff I guess, not really sure what that consists of, but there better be no boys.

Time, where does it go, I swear it goes faster and faster as each year rolls around.  It’s only like 209 days till christmas.  The last thing I want to see is winter again.  I’ve been trying to dig vacation time out of the schedule so I can try and enjoy the summer some what.  I just need mother nature to cooperate and give us a really nice long summer.  My fingers are crossed.  I haven’t even made it fishing yet.

The picture is a sunset I shot before coming to work.  It’s an HDR picture of course.  I need to get out and get some picture taking time in.

Indoor Lighting

May 4th, 2009

There is just nothing easy about this photography and lighting.  I guess eventually one learns it as you practice it.  I’ve been watching and reading tutorials on it and decided to do some DIY setups and produced:

Both Shot with ISO 200 50mm  with first one at 2.2 and second one at 2.8 using Aprature Priority.

I really do wish there was some “clinics” in the nearby area one could attend.  It helps a lot to be around the pros and see how things are done.  Youtube is the closes I can find for such things.

Spring

April 23rd, 2009

Spring kinda got a little rough on North Dakota this year and there is still people battling flooding.  The weather really hasn’t been cooperative and it’s put a real damper on getting out and doing photography stuffs.  I have been able to get out lately and get some pictures of the rivers and stuff.  The county roads are a mess and many are closed waiting for repairs for being washed out.  The weather forecast for the next 3 days is rain/snow mix.  We seem to be struggling to get heat.  We still have snow melting in the yard, but it’s getting down there finally.  Everyone is itching for the nicer weather and to get rolling.

I so need to find tires for my pickup.  I still have to figure out the oil burning issue first before I look at tires.  I also need to get the hood of my car painted yet, going on year 2 for that, sheesh.  One gets a day off and if the weather is nice, one wants to go do fishing or something instead of work on a vehicle.

Luka and I made it down to the cabin last weekend for the first time.  The water level of the river was normal, actually down as you could tell it had been higher.  Every thing looked good and it felt great to get out walking in the hills again, even if one had to walk around a snowbank or two.  I definately have to find a backpack to haul my camera stuff in tho, two cameras and accessories is too much to hang from the neck.   I just can’t get over the price they get for a bag.  You can pay up to $500.00 if you really wanted to.

ND Flooding – Staying in Touch

March 28th, 2009

The Red River has decided to break records again and while the state is scrambling to save their cities, the thing that has impressed me the most is the internet.  It’s the easiest way people are communicating and letting others know instantly of how things are going by the combination of using their cell phones to post to such things as Twitter and Facebook.  Here is my twitter page.  You can even have twitter send messages to your cell phone so when you are away from the computer you can stay in touch of latest events.  This is working really well for Fargo as people are using it for requests and help.  Someone needs help sandbagging, all they have to do is send out a twitter message to let people know where help is needed.  You can follow along to flooding with some very active channels #flood09.  Some other ones include:

1 Month

February 27th, 2009

The 26th of February marked officially one month of a picture a day.  When I started out I had no idea how hard it would be to doing 1 photo a day for a year.  I have since seen others doing such things, but they don’t do it for an entire year, only a certain amount of time.  I also discovered that flikr only allows 200 pictures to be displayed at a time with their free account.  So I am thinking instead of a photo a day, a photo a week.  I could just pick out one of my photos taken during the week and post it.  I’m thinking about getting a pro account on flickr.  It’s reasonably priced and makes yet another place to backup photos to.

February is going out colder than cold.  Last time I checked it was -39 wind chill outside.  It was just a crappy day period.  The wind blowing and drifting snow in and the snow blower acting up didn’t help any.  My blood pressure is way up, grrrrrrr.  I don’t know why, but it seems like everything is piling up all at once.  Stress is running high and I’m having a real hard time letting it go.  I’m looking at different options and having a hard time with decisions.  I’ve told myself that I need to let things just cool down before I decide anything.  First thing to do is lower the blood pressure and keep it  under control.  2nd step will be to re-evaluate everything and see what I can do there.  Changes need to happen, just got to figure it out.

I sent some pictures into the state and apparently they liked em.  They were just pictures of snow, but apparently the amount of snow that the state has gotten this year is a concern.  I will be so glad when we get thru the melting stages of spring.  I have no idea why I am dreading a spring of flooding.  I even ordered some ND filters for the camera to help capture cool water effects with the camera.  I’ll have to figure out now which one to use and when since I ordered a set of 3 in  a 2x 4x and 6x.  I so need to get a bigger camera bag to haul all of this around in.  I’m so looking forward to summer, but not the allergies.  I’ll probably just do the shot thing right away so I don’t have to worry about the allergies.
